Kate Fry was the sixth child of Elizabeth Brett & John Fry born October 9th, 1877 and christened December 16th, 1877 at Charlwood, Surrey, twin sister of John.
In 1881 & 1891 Kate was living at Peters Farm, Rusper, Sussex with her parents & brothers & sisters.
In 1901 Kate was employed by widow Ann Jane Keates, aged 70, & her daughter
Louisa Frances at Rownhams House, Rownhams, Hampshire. There were 7 servants
to look after them & Kate was a housemaid.
Rownhams House was a large brick mansion set in 40 acres of grounds &
Mrs Keates was mentioned as the owner in ‘A History of the County of
Hampshire’ published in 1908. Ann Keates had been widowed for more than
30 years & before his death her husband, John Keates, was a copper &
lead merchant.
Kate married Edward Henry Herrington on April 28th, 1903 at West Grinstead, Sussex. Edward was born February 28th, 1875 at Westhampnett, Sussex, the son of Isabella & Edward Herrington, an agricultural labourer.
Kate & Edward were living at The Stables, Mill Lane House, Slindon, Westhampnett, Sussex where Edward was a coachman in 1911. They had 3 children at this time – Ellen Catherine (7), Edward Henry (5) & Margaret Isabel (6 months).
Kate died on March 2nd, 1936, aged 58, & was buried at St Mary’s Church, Slindon.
The 1939 register shows widowed Edward still living at the The Stable, Mill Lane House. He was described as a chauffeur. Living nearby at 30 The Cottage, Mill Lane was son Edward, a gardener, with his wife, Dorothy M.
Edward of The Stables, Mill Lane House, Slindon died on August 4th, 1945, aged 70, at St Richards Hospital, Chichester. Edward was buried alongside Kate at St Mary’s Church, Slindon.
Administration of his estate was granted on March 20th, 1946 to son Edward Herrington, of no occupation. His effects were £230.10s.9d.
